SylPad Pressure Resistance Multiplier –
For High Pressure Live Leak Repair
SylPad is used in conjunction with Wrap & Seal Pipe Burst Tape when making a live leak repair on high pressure pipework in excess of 150mm diameter. It better concentrates the elastic force of the tape directly over the hole in the pipe, increasing Wrap & Seal pressure resistance by up to three times.
It makes Wrap & Seal more effective, reduces the number of tapes needed to reach high pressure resistance and speeds up repair time. SylPad is used with the two largest sizes of Wrap & Seal (PB-50x4HD and PB50x11HD) on holes up to 20mm in diameter.
SylPad is placed directly over the hole being sealed during the application of the tape. It sticks to the tape without the need for any adhesive. As layers of Wrap & Seal are built over SylPad, it changes the angle of the tape against the hole and directs more elastic force downwards.
This better concentrates the pressure resistance of Wrap & Seal over the leak. Depending on pipe diameter, the nature of the leak and repair quality, SylPad has been shown in testing to increase pressure resistance by up to three times.
SylPad is included as standard in SylWrap Universal Pipe Repair Kits 633 and 866 and all SylWrap Pipe Repair Contractor Bases covering pipework 150mm upwards.
Because SylPad is contained within layers of Wrap & Seal and does not come into contact with pipe contents, it does not require WRAS approval for use in high pressure live leak pipe repair on supply lines carrying potable water.
SylPad Pressure Resistance Multiplier Details
SylPad is only used on pipework over 150mm in diameter where changing the angle of Wrap & Seal is beneficial.
To use SylPad in conjunction with Wrap & Seal, the repair area is first marked with a horizontal line using a pen, so the exact location of the hole can be identified.
Wrap & Seal is then anchored 50mm to the site of the leak, before being wrapped towards the hole with a 50 percent overlay. Once the leak area has been reached, the tape is wrapped directly over it to build up layers.
After two layers, SylPad is pushed onto the Wrap & Seal covering the exact location of the hole as denoted by the pen mark. For ease of application, SylPad has been designed to adhere straight to the tape.
Wrap & Seal application then continues over the top of SylPad, securing it in place and building a ridge over the leak. Greater pressure is now directed down rather than spread outwards, as is the case with large diameter pipe repairs where SylPad is not used.
If water is still seeping from the pipe at the end of one Wrap & Seal, additional tapes are applied until the leak has been completely sealed. It is possible to use multiple Wrap & Seal to build a repair capable of holding 30 bar pressure.
Once the user is satisfied the leak has stopped, a SylWrap Pipe Repair Bandage should be applied to protect and reinforce the repair.

Using SylPad to increase pressure resistance of Wrap & Seal Pipe Burst Tape
Demonstration video filmed at Sylmasta HQ showing how to apply SylPad for the purpose of increasing the pressure resistance of Wrap & Seal Pipe Burst Tape. A 7.2mm hole was cut into a 450mm steel pipe operating at 3 bar pressure.
One large Wrap & Seal (PB-50x4mHD) combined with SylPad sealed the leak at the initial pressure. A second PB-50x4mHD tape was added, which increased the resistance of the repair to 6 bar. A third tape achieved 9 bar pressure resistance.
